Intro - PANTHER
The artist, Faire, exhibited for the first time as part of the Lysets Eliksir exhibition hosted by Annegrethe Davis at Bredgade Kunsthandel in 2016.
It was a young man in love with drawing and music who came strolling by. He was on his way through the streets of Copenhagen. I followed and for a while observed over his shoulder. Our conversation was a hazy jazz melody. He wandered down an alley with a sketchbook in his hand. An Alleycat with an alert gaze.
In 2018 he reappeared with the solo exhibition TRAFFIC in Bredgade Kunsthandel. His art is attracting attention and includes projects for murals and decorative art. In 2019 he exhibited at Tekminimal Gallery Sydney Australia and at South Philly Barbacoa Side Gallery USA. In 2017, 2019 and again in January 2020 Faire exhibited his art at the Danish art fair, Art Herning. His next solo exhibition was scheduled.
There is a new energy to his work. He has been travelling. New experiences, new stories are brought back from Boston Bay (Jamaica), Sydney, Philadelphia, New York and Copenhagen. The stories are about people, about black and white, about walking in others’ streets, about seeking cover, about eating meals together with an open soul.
A PANTHER finds his trail.

PANTHER
It is a coincidence of different subjects that leads to the title of the exhibition - PANTHER.
One night I’m watching Kipling’s The Jungle Book on TV, where Ben Kingsley gives voice to the panther, Bagheera. The panther is No man’s plaything with his soft, black coat, his immense integrity and his precise movements.
But when we meet at the Danish art fair, Art Herning, January 2020, it is most importantly a music in Faire’s movements that evokes the metaphor and the title of this solo exhibition - PANTHER.
In January the artist has just arrived back in Denmark after a long journey, and the stories are lined up in a row. One of them concerns how Faire finds his way as white person in a black ghetto in Philadelphia, USA, where the police believe that he must be a drug addict. Otherwise he would not stay there. They find it hard to believe that he is in an Art Residency in South West Philadelphia and keep an eye on him. As a white man he sticks out.
Faire lives in South West Philly for three months and learns to move around in the city’s dark neighbourhoods. He respectfully listens to the place, watches the traditions, and gets to know the people.
Like a panther, he follows the footprints in the dark and finds his way, watchful and awake.
RULES // DECODING
He always has a watchful eye. Life is a balancing act between gold and a dung-heap; it takes some learning to understand what rules govern daily life.
Drawing is a well-known release-valve. A moment arrives, where it shows itself to be the one opportunity that can fill the cup of life. Faire has chosen his path as an artist. Here are many stairways, many fields open for exploring.
Music is as important as breathing. And skating. Here is a free culture with many like-minded people, who train his body and soul. Here is an international environment and a possibility for travel.
“This is my advice to everyone, who gets the opportunity”, Faire says, “Travel, and sometimes travel alone. That way you get to see more. Otherwise, if you go as a group, you risk taking your own rules with you. Then it will be the rules of the group that matter the most.”
WOODLAND Ave., SOUTH WEST PHILADELPHIA
In the exhibition you will, amongst others, see some stories from Benjamin’s House near Woodland Avenue, South West Philadelphia, which is one stop on Faire’s journey. Benjamin and his wife, Cristina Martinez, invited Faire to come to United States. Together, they run a restaurant in The Italian Market and Ben has a house in a rough part of town called South West Philly, where white people are watched, as all of us watch people, who do not look like ourselves.
Categorisation has been here since Adam and Eve and mistrust since Cain and Abel.
As primitive creatures we fight for the sources, the resources, the power, the honours. Judgements are instinctive and practical. And dangerous too. It is up to us how we make our judgements. Which rules we make, and which rules we follow.
As a white person, you come with an open mind. You are used to society running in your own rhythm. If you go into a black neighbourhood, you do not have the historical and cultural heritage, the anger or mistrust, that weighs like a chain around the ankles of who who stand on the fringes.
JAMAICA SUNSET
In the comparatively small Danish society, we usually have a great degree of trust in fellow citizens and generally see each other as equals. When we travel, we meet other realities and values.
Faire exhibits several times during his one year of travel, and gathers many experiences on his way through Bangkok, Indonesia, Sydney (Australia), Portland (Jamaica), Philadelphia, New York, and again coming back home to Denmark. He sees power, he sees money move, he watches out for rules, he sees the people.
Faire paints narrative pictures, but they do not carry political messages. The paintings have their own genre, improvised, like a blues tune on a piano. There is a volatility in the expression. There is energy and dynamism. The compositions are well structured and simple. Some with great graphic qualities. Faire likes to work on paper.
The inspiration for the simplicity in colour comes from, amongst others, the abstract painter Piet Mondrian, who used very few base colours. The blue, the yellow, the orange, the red, the black. It works.
Still the colours are mostly leftovers he finds cheaply, when he cycles around on his bike.
Faire paints what he sees. He catches the mood, he finds the beat, he lets the faces live forever.
The motives are born while hunting.
